This is a question that we easily are asked a few times a month. Along with what is a US DOT Number. If you’re asking these questions you either are about to start a trucking company or related business or you’re personally thinking about moving something that requires permit due to the size of the item, such as a boat, shed, fiberglass pool or a hot tub.
First, I want to say that when operating any type of business in the trucking industry you want to pay special attention the the United States Department of Transportation regulations. Also be aware that regulations do change from time to time and you should take time to make sure you’re familiar with the current regulations and which ones apply to you. Vehicles are separated in categories by their GVW (gross vehicle weight). You can visit the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration at www.fmcsa.dot.gov for more information.
To check your local DOT regulation you can goto our “Resources” tab on the main menu and click on state DOT Website list. Visit your home state Department of Transportation and locate your local regulations.
You are required to have a US DOT number if you carry passengers, haul cargo across state lines. You also would be required to register with the FMCSA.
Why do we have US DOT Numbers? Well serve as a unique identifier like how the government issues when collecting and monitoring a company’s safety information acquired during audits, compliance reviews, crash investigations, and inspections.
These few paragraphs give a very basic explanation of DOT Numbers and you should know it you need one or not. If you have anymore questions please call me at 888-379-2525 x2.
